Dirichlet's condition,
n. the condition, as extended by Jordan, that a periodic function be of bounded variation in a neighborhood of a point. This suffices to guarantee that the Fourier series of the function converges pointwise to the average of the limits of the function from the right and left, and so, if the function is continuous, to the function value at the point. A related result (Fejer's condition) shows that if the function is merely integrable then pointwise Cesaro convergence is achieved, and that when the function is continuous the Cesaro averages of the partial sums of the Fourier series converge uniformly to the function.
