Graphene oxide, world's thinnest bar of soap

It is not every day that a basic science discovery has an immediate application in engineering. New results from a material science research group at Northwestern University may be just such a case. In a publication in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, Jiaxing Huang's team reports on its discovery that a single sheet of graphene oxide has an unexpected mixture of material properties.

Graphene oxide (which seems to be in the news lately) is a chemical cousin and precursor of graphene, a material that consists of only a single atomic layer of carbon. Graphene oxide is basically a large, disordered, but two-dimensional, polymer of carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen. Formed by reacting graphite powder with strong oxidizers, it is one potential intermediary on the road to producing graphene, a material that's being

studied for use in futuristic electronic devices.
