In hoofdstuk 1 van Chandler's
Introduction to Modern Statistical Mechanics introduceert de schrijver de tweede wet van thermodynamica als volgt: There is an extensive function of state, entropy
\(S(E,\bf{X})\)
, which is a monotonically increasing function of
\(E\)
, and if state
\(B\)
is adiabatically accessible from state
\(A\)
, the
\(S_B \geq S_A\)
. Dit houdt dus in dat
\(\Bigl( \frac{\partial S}{\partial E} \Bigr)_{\bf{X}} > 0\)
, of dat
\(\Bigl( \frac{\partial E}{\partial S} \Bigr)_{\bf{X}} \geq 0\)
, waarbij deze laatste gedefinieerd is als temperatuur
\(T\)
. Verder leidt de schrijver af dat
\(\Bigl( \frac{\partial S}{\partial \bf{X}} \Bigr)_E = - \frac{\bf{f}}{T}\)
.
Nu komt de vraag. Stel dat de toestandsvergelijking van een rubberen band een van deze twee mogelijkheden is:
(1)
\(S = L_0 \gamma (\theta E / L_0)^{1/2} - L_0 \gamma \Bigl[ \frac{1}{2}\Bigl( \frac{L}{L_0}\Bigr)^2 + \frac{L_0}{L} - \frac{3}{2} \Bigr]\)
(2)
\(S = L_0 \gamma e^{\theta n E / L_0} - L_0 \gamma \Bigl[ \frac{1}{2}\Bigl( \frac{L}{L_0}\Bigr)^2 + \frac{L_0}{L} - \frac{3}{2} \Bigr]\)
Waarbij
\(L_0 = n l_0\)
en
\(\gamma\)
,
\(l_0\)
en
\(\theta\)
zijn constanten en
\(L\)
is de lengte van de rubberen band. Welke van deze twee mogelijkheden is acceptabel en waarom? Bepaal hiervoor
\(f(T,L/n)\)
.
Het enige wat ik kan bedenken waarom iets wel of niet kan is dat
\(S\)
een monotoon stijgende functie moet zijn in
\(E\)
, en dus heb ik de afgeleiden bepaald.
(1)
\(\Bigl( \frac{\partial S}{\partial E} \Bigr)_L = \frac{1}{2} \gamma (L_0 \theta / E)^{1/2}\)
(2)
\(\Bigl( \frac{\partial S}{\partial E} \Bigr)_L = \gamma n \theta e^{\theta n E / L_0}\)
Maar beide zijn nu altijd groter dan 0. Waarom kan een van de twee dan toch niet?
Verder geloof ik dat voor beide situaties geldt:
\(f = -T \Bigl( \frac{\partial S}{\partial L} \Bigr)_E = \gamma T \Bigl[ \frac{L}{L_0} - \Bigl(\frac{L_0}{L}\Bigr)^2 \Bigr]\)
Kan iemand dit bevestigen?
