Een retention gap is een kolom van ongeveer 10 meter met niet geactiveerd silica, maar zonder stationaire fase. Zo is er een minimale interactie. Deze kolom komt voor de standaard kolom.
" Retention gaps are used to improve peak shapes for some types of samples, columns, and GC conditions. Usually a minimum of 3-5 meters of tubing is required to obtain the benefits of a retention gap. The situations that benefit the most from retention gaps are large volume injections (>2 µL) and solvent-stationary phase polarity mismatches for splitless, Megabore direct and on-column injections. Peak shapes are sometimes distorted when using combinations of these conditions. Polarity mismatches occur when the sample solvent and column stationary phase are very different in polarity. The greatest improvement is seen for the peaks eluting closest to the solvent front or solutes very similar to the solvent in polarity. Wat ik uit de tekst begrepen heb, is dat niet vluchtige stoffen in deze kolom achterblijven, zodat de vluchtige stoffen zonder vertraging in de capilaire kolom terecht komen. En dus betere pieken geven door het ontbreken van storende elementen.

Een retention gap dient ook om van een grote overmaat van het solvent af te komen, vooral nuttig bij large volume injecties.

Een retentiegap met een interne diameter van 0.53 mm kan gebruikt worden om cold-on-column te injecteren. Je naald pas in de kolom, zodat je oplossing direct in de kolom wordt geinjecteerd.
