Question about the GC-column saturation

Hello,

For my internship, I determined the influence of the concentration of a component on its retention time.

The concentration was varied from 0.66% to 50% for both an alkane (decane in hexane) and an acid (pentanoic acid in acetonitril).

Increasing the concentration from 0.66% to 50% has a relative small influence on the decane peak, the retention time increased from 11.445min to 11.628min (http://knoore.com/conca.jpg). For the pentanoic acid, the retention time increased from 9.03min to 10.72min (http://knoore.com/concz.jpg).

Now my question is:

Why is the influence on the acid higher then on the alkane.

Re: Question about the GC-column saturation

I think it has something to due with te interaction between your injected compounds. Simple alkanes have a little influence on each other. Acid groups 'stick' more together, as a result of their ability to form hydrogen bridges.

It could be an explanation but I am not completely sure.
