The Gibbs adsorption isotherm shows that solutes are enriched at the surface of a liquid once the solvent-solute interaction is less favorable than the solvent-solvent interaction. The goal of the exercise is to use the lattice model to retrieve this qualitative interpretation of the Gibbs adsorption isotherm in the limit of strong dilution
- Consider a lattice with Nb sites in the bulk and Ns sites at the surface. A molecule has zb nearest neighbors in the bulk and zs at the surface.
- Denote the amount of A molecules in the bulk and at the surface NA,b and NA,srespectively and write the free energy of the entire system as the sum of a separate bulk and surface contribution.
- Express physicochemical equilibrium by considering the interchange of a molecule B in the surface and a molecule A in the bulk. Take the limit xA,b-> 1 and xA,s -> 1 and demonstrate the relation: RTln((1-xA,b)/(1-xA,s))=(zb-zs)(wAA-wAB)
- Interpret your results in view of the Gibbs adsorption isotherm
