Engels SE schrijfopdracht!

Hallo allemaal,

Is having prejudices ever a good thing? No!

Everybody has  them and everybody has  to deal with prejudices. Nobody likes them, but why do we have them? It narrows down the people you could be friends with, you judge people on the stereotype you have of them in your head and if you often go with your first impression it could be a difficulty for people around you.  That is why I am against having prejudices.

Firstly, by having prejudices about people, you shut yourself down from having many social contacts. For example, you do not want to interact with certain children from your class, because they are not how you would identify yourself. That is why you would not make contact with them, but maybe those children turn out to be different than you would have thought in the beginning. Thinking this way may  have cost you good friendships. That is why you do not need to jump your conclusions.

Secondly, by thinking of people in a certain way, you put them in boxes.  Often people are judged on their looks and on their origin, but these things do not say something about how they really are. For example,  not everyone who is Moroccan, is a criminal. Unfortunately a lot of people assume this on previous experiences. Now every Moroccan has to deal with these negative expectations people have of them and need to put a lot of  effort in convincing people that they are not what people think. Having prejudices of people can make their lives more difficult.

Thirdly, the prejudices people have are often false. That means you have to adjust them at a certain point. Sometimes it is not so easy, because some people do not change their mind. For these people obtain they need to be proven wrong. If this does not happen, it can be harmful for the people who have to live with these judgements. For example, if a judge would base his verdict on prejudices, a lot of people would be in jail for no reason.  This is why you need to be open minded .

In the end, nothing good comes out of having prejudices. They make you  less likely to socialize, you form stereotypes in your head and they are rarely or never true.  That is why I think we need to stop having them.  So think in your life with a clear mind.

but these things do not say something about how they really are.

but these things say nothing ?? about how they really are.

For these people obtain they need to be proven wrong.

So think in your life with a clear mind.

Ik zou gewoon gaan voor "you judge people (based) on stereotypes and if you ...."

That is why you do not need to jump your conclusions.
That is why you do not need to jump to your conclusions.

Secondly, by thinking of people in a certain way, you put them in boxes.
Overbodig. Secondly, thinking of people in a certain way puts them in boxes.

Often people are judged on their looks and on their origin, but these things do not say something about how they really are.
Als je twee keer on their wil vermijden kan je die laatste weglaten en zeggen: "Often people are judged on their looks and origin, but ...."

For example,  not everyone who is Moroccan, is a criminal. Unfortunately a lot of people assume this on previous experiences. Now every Moroccan has to deal with these negative expectations people have of them and need to put a lot of  effort in convincing people that they are not what people think.

For these people obtain they need to be proven wrong.
Dit snap ik ook niet helemaal.

So think in your life with a clear mind.
So keep an open mind when you judge people?

Re: Engels SE schrijfopdracht!

  1. Say what you are going to say and put this in the form of a thesis
  2. Build up your argumentation
  3. Come to your conclusion in a logical paragraph
(Eén ding: na 'if' komt nooit 'would')

Everybody has  at least some kind of prejudice and everybody must deal with prejudices. Nobody likes being prejudicial, but the question is why do we have prejudices? They narrow down your chances of making friends, they make you judge people based on the stereotypical way you think of them, and relying purely on your first impressions of someone, you might make life difficult for yourself and others.  Therefore, I think being prejudiced is wrong.

Firstly, by approaching people with a prejudicial mind, you will miss out on possible contacts socially. For example, if you do not want to interact with certain children in your class, because they do not meet the standards you think are socially acceptable to you, you may miss out on having some nice contacts. It could be, however, that those children may be totally different than you thought them to be. Thinking this way may have caused to miss out on some good friends. That is why you must not jump to any conclusions prematurely.

Secondly, by thinking of people in a certain way, you are putting them in boxes. People are often judged on their looks and where they come from, but this may not tell you anything about how they really are. For example,  not everyone who happens to be of Moroccan descent, is a criminal. Unfortunately, a lot of people assume this to be the case, based on experiences they may have had previously. Now the majority of Moroccans must deal with these negative expectations that people have of them and they must put a lot of effort into convincing people that they are not how people might think. Being prejudiced against can make their lives more difficult.

Thirdly, people often have false prejudices, meaning that you will need to adjust them at a certain point. Sometimes this is not easily done, because of the pigheadedness of some people. They must be proven wrong before they will believe anything. If this does not happen, then the people having to undergo prejudices may be harmed unjustly. For example, should a judge base his verdict on prejudice, many people would be unjustly imprisoned. That is the reason why you must keep an open mind.

Finally, nothing good will come of being prejudiced. You will be  less likely to socialize, you will form stereotypes in your head that are rarely or never true.  That is why I think prejudices must be avoided at all cost.  So, keep a clear mind about everything in your life.
