Integendeel

The WTO's Agreement on Agriculture has become a form of control of the food system that puts power squarely in the hands of export producers, large businesses and elites, at the expense of family farmers.

[...]

Though agriculture was the carrot to lure the Third World into the WTO and other trade agreements, it has turned into the most contentious issue as the Third World is devastated by the dumping of cheap and subsidized agricultural products from the United States and the European Union.

[...]

Destruction of rural economies and communities is occurring throughout the world. According to the Indian government, over two million farmers are alienated from land each year.

The AOA has been the economic engine for promoting industrial agriculture -- replacing family farmers with agribusiness, family farms with corporate farms, and biodiversity with monocropping.

[...]

Both industrial agriculture and liberalization of agriculture have further concentrated land holdings with the rich landlords, displacing small farmers around the world. Displaced from their lands, farmers have been forced to eke a miserable livelihood in cities where they form the core of cheap labor for the sweatshops. In India, we have witnessed poor farmers consuming pesticides to end their lives.

The government's commitment to biofuel has exacerbated the stand-off between landowners and landless groups.

Much of the land now dedicated to sugarcane production used to be pasture, leading to concerns that production of another booming export - cattle - will be shifted further into the Amazon, causing greater deforestation.

[...]

Although bioethanol has been hailed by some as an economic panacea, it is feared that sugarcane monoculture will bring few benefits for the poor, instead igniting further arguments over environmental degradation, hunger and unemployment, and deepening agrarian disputes.

Under the right conditions, biofuels offer important opportunities for poverty reduction by stimulating stagnant agricultural sectors, thus creating jobs for agricultural workers and markets for small farmers.

[...]

Unfortunately such conditions, including national and corporate policies with clear pro-poor, environmental, and social objectives, are not evident in the emerging agro-industrial model. Instead, a scramble to supply the European market is taking place in the South, and poor people are getting trampled.

[...]

The clearance of critical ecosystems, such as rainforests, to make way for biofuel plantations has rightly raised serious concerns from an environmental perspective. But millions of people also face displacement from their land as the scramble to supply intensifies.

[...]

Once people lose their land, they lose their livelihoods. Many will end up in slums in search of work, others will fall into migratory labour patterns, some will be forced to take jobs – often in precarious conditions – on the very plantations which displaced them.

Under the right conditions, biofuels offer important opportunities for poverty reduction by stimulating stagnant agricultural sectors, thus creating jobs for agricultural workers and markets for small farmers.
