Sommige kinderen zijn vóór hun geboorte al besmet met een herpesvirus. Al voor de eerste celdeling zelfs, blijkt nu. Ze erven het virale DNA samen met de rest van hun erfelijk materiaal van pa of ma. Deze manier van virusoverdracht was nog nooit aangetoond.
