Reagan was geen libertarian in de betekenis van anarchist maar van liberaal en in die zin wel een extreme voor Nederlandse begrippen. Hij was geen anti-new-dealer reactionair zoals Rothbard maar een tegenstander van de great society verzorgingsstaat die het persoonlijk initiatief belemmert en luiheid beloont.

Waarbij je moet bedenken dat: 1) hij met een democratisch congres te maken had en dus compromissen sloot, 2) de financiering van de sociale zekerheid hervormd diende te worden hetgeen in eerste instantie lastenverzwaring noodzakelijk maakte 3) Reagan hoge militaire uitgave noodzakelijk achtte.
Reagan kon soms tijdelijke protectionistische maatregelen laten passeren en had op dat gebied wat assertiever mogen zijn maar

Reagan's heart and head were clearly on the side of free trade. While president, he declared in 1986: "Our trade policy rests firmly on the foundation of free and open markets. I recognize ... the inescapable conclusion that all of history has taught: The freer the flow of world trade, the stronger the tides of human progress and peace among nations." It was the Reagan administration that launched the Uruguay Round of multilateral trade negotiations in 1986 that lowered global tariffs and created the World Trade Organization. It was his administration that won approval of the U.S.-Canada Free Trade Agreement in 1988. That agreement soon expanded to include Mexico in what became the North American Free Trade Agreement, realizing a vision that Reagan first articulated in the 1980 campaign. It was Reagan who vetoed protectionist textile quota bills in 1985 and 1988.

Verder moet niet vergeten worden dat de economische en politieke situatie in 1981 behoorlijk deplorabel was. Moeilijk valt te ontkennen dat Reagan, zijn medewerkers en de FED de VS en de wereld economische voorspoed hebben gebracht en een trendbreuk van als maar meer overheidsingrijpen. Zijn buitenlandse beleid was, zoals bekend, zo mogelijk nog succesvoller.
Allerlei is door een liberaal in Reagan te waarderen zoals zijn eerste besluit: het afschaffen van alle prijswetten, (die met name de olieindustrie bevoordeelden). Zijn gerechtelijke benoemingen : hij was een tegenstander van abortus maar benoemde als eerste Sandra Day oConnor als hogerechter. Dit omdat hij het belangrijk vond dat niet door middel van gerechtelijke uitspraken wetten werden geschreven, wat voordien in toenemende mate gebeurde, maar de rechters de wetten louter interpreteerden, wat natuurlijk hun taak is.

If you analyze it I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism. I think conservatism is really a misnomer just as liberalism is a misnomer for the liberalsif we were back in the days of the Revolution, so-called conservatives today would be the Liberals and the liberals would be the Tories. The basis of conservatism is a desire for less government interference or less centralized authority or more individual freedom and this is a pretty general description also of what libertarianism is.
Now, I cant say that I will agree with all the things that the present group who call themselves Libertarians in the sense of a party say, because I think that like in any political movement there are shades, and there are libertarians who are almost over at the point of wanting no government at all or anarchy. I believe there are legitimate government functions. There is a legitimate need in an orderly society for some government to maintain freedom or we will have tyranny by individuals. The strongest man on the block will run the neighborhood. We have government to insure that we dont each one of us have to carry a club to defend ourselves. But again, I stand on my statement that I think that libertarianism and conservatism are travelling the same path.
Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children's children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.
